Two limits, not one
Models have both a total context limit and a separate maximum output limit. You can hit either: a prompt that fits the context can still request more output than the model will produce in one call. Check your input against the context limit and your expected answer against the output limit.
FAQ
Is the output limit the same as the context limit?
No. Many models cap output well below the full context, for example a 128K context with a 16K max output. Both limits apply to every request.
