Estimate before you send
Estimating tokens up front lets you catch a prompt that will overflow the context window or blow the budget before you spend a single API call. For GPT the estimate is exact; for other providers it is a tested approximation, close enough to plan around but not to bill against.

How accurate is the estimate for non-OpenAI models?
Within a small margin for English prose. Each provider tokenizes slightly differently, so treat non-GPT numbers as estimates, clearly labeled as such in the results.
