Counting tokens in plain text
For plain prose the count tracks closely with word count, about 1.33 tokens per word, but capitalization, punctuation and rare words all nudge it up. Pasting the actual text is the only way to be exact, because the same word count can tokenize differently depending on the specific words used.

Does formatting affect the token count?
Yes. Extra spaces, line breaks and punctuation each cost tokens, so the same words formatted differently can produce different counts.
