Why Markdown token counts differ
Markdown syntax (headings, links, code fences, tables) adds tokens beyond the visible words. Rendered length and token count are not the same thing.

Does Markdown formatting cost tokens?
Yes. Headings, link syntax, code fences and table pipes are all tokenized, so the raw Markdown costs more tokens than the rendered text appears to.
